Aaron Maybin Scouting Report:
At about 240 pounds, Aaron Maybin is a little small to play as an every-down NFL defensive end in a 4-3 set. Which is why he might be destined to end up playing linebacker with a team that runs a base 3-4 alignment, like the Cleveland Browns or the Green Bay Packers (who are making the switch this offseason). If he has any aspirations of playing a traditional defensive end role, he is going to have to bulk up and add some strength.
Maybin’s biggest asset is his speed and quickness off the line. And it’s always a concern how much quickness a guy like Maybin might lose should he add another 15-20 pounds. He does appear to have the frame to handle the extra weight, which could make him even more valuable for a team that likes to shift between the 4-3 and 3-4 because of his versatility.
Because of his speed, Maybin is at his best as an edge rusher, but he does have good technique and does a good job of not letting offensive linemen get inside on him. He uses his hands well.
As a third-year sophomore, Maybin doesn’t have a ton of experience, but his talent showed in 2008 when he led the Big Ten with 12 sacks and finished with 20 tackles for a loss.
