Friday morning coin flips at the scouting combine in Indianapolis determined the fate for six teams, as three draft-order ties had to be broken.
With identical 7-9 records last season, the Chicago Bears and the Jacksonville Jaguars tied for the 10th overall spot in the nfl draft. Friday’s coin flip landed in favor of the Jaguars giving them the 10th pick in the draft. The teams will alternate selections in each round after.
The Denver Broncos had a keen interest in the results of this contest as they own the rights to Chicago’s first-round selection due to the Jay Cutler trade. That means after Jacksonville picks in the 10th spot, Denver will go next.
The second coin flip determined the drafting order between the Tennessee Titans and the Carolina Panthers, who each finished the season with 8-8 records. However, as with the first flip, a third team will be the actual benefactor of the results as the San Francisco 49ers own the Panthers’ pick in the first round.
The coin landed in favor of the Titans, who will receive the 16th pick in the draft. San Francisco will pick 17th, but it will be Carolina and Tennessee who alternate picks in subsequent rounds thereafter.
The final flip of the coin on Friday determined the 19th and 20th spots in the NFL draft. Competing for this honor were the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans. Atlanta won the toss and will make the 19th selection in the draft, with Houston picking 20th. The Texans, Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, who all finished with 9-7 records in 2009, will alternate the 18th, 19th and 20th selection throughout the rest of the draft.
The 75th NFL Draft will again be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and will kickoff in prime time for the first time in 2010. The first round of the draft will start on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the second and third rounds on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. ET.
