This article will break down Day one of the 2009 nfl draft Denver Broncos. Due to the Jay Cutler trade and other deals the Broncos had 5 draft picks on day one in the 2009 nfl draft. I don’t think they did an exceptional job in round one but I give them a solid A minus for round two.
Denver panicked when whatever defensive player they wanted was gone by their number 12 pick in the first round. So they reached for running back Knowshon Moreno too early, as there were quality players still around. Moreno is a decent back to be sure but the Broncos really needed defensive help. I guess they did get tired of hiring running backs off the street in 2008 due to all the injuries to the position. But I believe in this day and age you can pick up good running backs on day two of the nfl draft and Moreno was a bit of a reach. This pick will lower the 2009 NFL draft day one grade for the Broncos.
The 18th pick in the first round the Broncos picked linebacker Robert Ayers out of Tennessee. Ayer has good size and decent speed, and coming from the SEC he is used to big games.
In the second round of the 2009 NFL draft the Broncos gave cornerback Champ Baily some help in the defensive backfield. Alphonso Smith was considered a first round talent until his slow 40 times materialized. Playing at Wake Forest didn’t give him the biggest competition but Smith may be a good player. Smith was the 37th pick on day one of the 2009 NFL draft. With pick 47 the Broncos added cornerback Darcel McBath out of Texas Tech. McBath will probably play safety in the NFL and as a former corner he has some coverage skills.
With their final day one pick in the 2009 NFL draft, Denver went back to their offense. North Carolina tight end Richard Quinn is a good blocker and has great size at 6ft 4 and over 260 pounds. According to NFL.com Quinn only had 12 career receptions but he is a good blocker. I really think the Broncos should have gone defensive line here but a blocking tight end will help that running game so it may work out.
Overall I give the Denver Broncos a B grade for their day one 2009 nfl draft picks. If Moreno turns out to be a special back then of course the draft grade will go up. However I feel it takes two seasons to really evaluate a NFL draft and 3 seasons for a quarterback.
