The Green Bay Packers head to the Metrodome to take on Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings on ESPN’s Monday Night NFL Football in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. Last week, Favre looked like his former MVP self when he hooked up with Greg Lewis for a 32-yard touchdown strike with two seconds left to beat the 49ers 27-24. The Packers took care of the Rams 36-17 on the road behind three touchdowns by Favre’s replacement Aaron Rodgers. If the last meeting in this series is any indication of what we might see Monday night, then hold on to your seats. In Week 10 of last season, the Vikings edged out the Packers 28-27 when Mason Crosby sent his 52-yard field goal attempt wide right as time expired. Other than that loss, this series has been all Green Bay of late. The Packers have won five of the last six meetings and own a 49-46-1 lead in the all-time series. nfl football odds makers have given the edge to Favre and Minnesota, listing the Vikings as 3.5-point favorites with the total set at 45.
Favre is really down-playing this game, saying that it has nothing to do with revenge. I think he’s lying through his teeth and would like nothing more than to dominate his former team. Favre has had this one circled since he signed with the Vikings, but the key to a Vikings win may not be Brett. He has played relatively mistake-freenfl football to this point as the Vikings have leaned on their strong running attack and that needs to be the approach again here. Green Bay has given up big yardage on the ground each of the last two weeks so it would be wise to ride Adrian Peterson all day long if the Packers can’t stop him. Peterson is leading the nfl football in rushing and averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Now he gets a chance to pick on the league’s 23rd ranked run defense.
Defensively, the guy I’ll be watching is end Jared Allen, whose 59.5 sacks since 2004 are the most in the nfl football during that span. If he can get to Rodgers consistently, it could be a long day for the Packers. It is worth noting that Minnesota is 19-8 against the spread in home games following a win by six or less points since 1992. If you like Brett Favre to have his revenge and cover the spread in the process, bet the Vikings at -3.5 at BetUS.
