Game recap: On a field where very few visitors have left victorious, the Bucs were able to come away with a win – despite traveling from one corner of the country to the other. Tampa Bay beat the Seahawks for their first road win of the season, 24-7, ending Seattle’s hopes of finishing the season with a .500 record.
Fantasy stud (s): Kellen Winslow Jr., TE, TB (six catches for 93 yards)
Winslow continues to be Josh Freeman’s favorite target, and the big fella came through. This offense is not a high-scoring one, by any means, and Winslow has just one TD in his past nine games.
Fantasy dud (s): Matt Hasselbeck, QB, SEA (27 of 46 for 256 passing yards, one TD, four INTs and one fumble lost)
Many fantasy owners might have rolled the dice on Hasselbeck on a Bucs pass defense that gave up huge games at different points this season. But this unit has improved over the course of the season, and Hasselbeck just couldn’t keep possession of the ball.
Let me introduce you to: Sammie Stroughter, WR, TB (four catches for 46 yards)
I’ve introduced you to him before, but it seemed prudent to remind you about him. The rookie caught a career-high four passes in this game and he’s setting up to be a pretty good No. 2 or 3 receiver in his NFL career.
Stat of the day: Seattle outgained the Bucs 234 yards to 117 in the first half, yet they led just 7-3 at halftime.
Key injury: Seahawks rookie LB Aaron Curry left this game in the second half with an arm injury.
Rookie look: Josh Freeman, QB, TB (16 of 26 for 205 passing yards, two TDs and one INT)
Once again, the rookie signal-caller out of Kansas State made veteran decisions with the ball for most of the game. His most egregious error was an interception early in the game to end the team’s first drive.
Defense/Special teams: The Bucs 28th-ranked defense forced five turnovers and they sacked Hasselbeck once. The Seahawks held the Bucs under 350 total net yards, but they couldn’t make up for their offense’s turnovers … Seattle couldn’t do much when the Bucs were continually given a short field after a turnover. They did, however, allow the Bucs to rush for 134 yards.
Look ahead: Tampa Bay travels to New Orleans to face an awfully pissed off Saints team that recorded their first loss of the season Saturday against Dallas. The Saints crushed the Bucs 38-7 back in Week 10 … Seattle goes to Green Bay for the first time since Mike Holmgren wasn’t the coach of either ballclub. Seattle is 1-6 on the road this year.
Things you didn’t know: The Bucs scored on five straight possessions for 24 unanswered points … This was Hasselbeck’s four-INT game in over five years … CB Kelly Jennings had to line up as Seattle’s long snapper on punts because of injuries.
Final take: Seattle was in the Super Bowl just a few years ago, but it’s evident that they are ready for a pretty big overhaul. Justin Forsett is a good young back, but he’s not a gamechanger or a workhorse … The Bucs, meanwhile, were $30 million under the salary cap this year, and they certainly have handed the keys to the franchise to Freeman. With an early draft pick likely to shore up the middle of their defensive line in April, the Bucs could go for a running back in one of the next two rounds. Adding a very good free agent wide receiver, such as Vincent Jackson, could do wonders for Freeman’s fantasy value next year.
